Breast Cancer: Is It in My Genes?
Although the majority of people who are diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history, about 5 percent to 10 percent of cases occur because of a change in certain genes that are known to increase the risk to develop cancer. Knowing your family history can help to understand your risk and to determine if hereditary breast cancer runs in your family.
This talk will help to understand if you are at risk for hereditary breast cancer and what you can do to break the cycle. We will also discuss how to determine what your risk for breast cancer is and the appropriate screening for each level of risk. Participants will gain an understanding of the nuances of genetic testing including who needs it, how to get it and its drawbacks.
